In addition to being a time when automakers raise prices on their vehicles, a new year also marks when automakers figure out what vehicles to keep around. Last summer, Volkswagen announced that the 2024 Arteon would be getting some updates. The Arteon was supposed to get new 20-inch wheels and an updated lineup, as the SE R-Line was going to be dropped. Then VW updated the press release to remove any information on the updated 2024 Arteon. And now, a new report from Carscoops claims that the Arteon has been dropped from VW’s lineup early.

Because of the original press release outlining changes to the 2024 Arteon, we thought the sedan would stick around until the end of 2024. That doesn’t seem to be the case, as the Arteon is basically being discontinued immediately for the U.S. market.
“Please note that the Model Year 2023 marks the end of the Arteon production for the U.S. market,” reads a letter that was shared on social media that Carscoops found. “Volkswagen will continue to feature the ever-popular Jetta and GLI in our sedan lineup, our core models that offer exceptional performance and style.”

Carscoops reached out to VW spokesperson Mark Gillies who confirmed that the Arteon would be discontinued. Apparently, the Arteon is being discontinued as quickly as possible because of statements that Volkswagen CEO, Thomas Schafer, made in regard to production of low-volume models like the Arteon. The Arteon, and other low-volume models, are being discontinued because of VW’s “Accelerate Forward | Road to 6.5” plan, claims the outlet. Apparently, Volkswagen is making some cuts to save money.

What Volkswagen did is confusing and the fact that it didn’t share what it did is even more confusing. Clearly, VW’s timeline for the Arteon wasn’t set in stone. Shoppers who have been looking to purchase an Arteon will want to act quickly. Once VW runs out of Arteons that’s it, they’re all gone.

According to order guide data, the 2024 Arteon was set to start at $47,857 for the SEL Premium R-Line with 4Motion. That would have been a large increase of roughly $5,000 compared to the 2023 SE R-Line FWD model that started at $43,010. With slow sales and a massive price increase coming for 2024, VW may have decided that it wasn’t worth it to bring the 2024 Arteon to market.

With the death of the Arteon, VW now has a large sedan missing in its lineup. It’s expected to be filled with the upcoming all-electric ID.7, which is set to arrive as a 2025 model.
