While automakers are working hard on coming out with hybrids, one segment of vehicles where hybrids are hard to find is the subcompact SUV segment. The small class of hybrid subcompact SUVs may grow shortly, as Kia is reportedly looking into coming out with an electrified version of the Seltos.

A report from The Korea Economic Daily claims that the next generation of the Seltos will be available with a hybrid engine. The next-gen Seltos, and its new hybrid version, are expected to arrive next year. The news comes from unnamed sources within the automotive industry.

Beyond stating that a Seltos Hybrid is on its way, the report doesn’t provide any more information on the vehicle. The outlet does provide some information on why Kia is looking to add another hybrid to its roster. According to the outlet, hybrids accounted for 10.6% of Hyundai’s global sales in the fourth quarter of 2023. That marks a 7.1% increase from 2022. For Kia, hybrid sales are up 51% in the U.S. in January 2024 compared to January 2023. Executives at Hyundai Motor Group want the growth to continue.

We’re not sure what Kia has in store for the Seltos Hybrid. Kia’s corporate cousin, Hyundai, sells the Hyundai Kona in the U.S., but does not offer a hybrid version of Kona in America. In other parts of the world, the Kona Hybrid comes with a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine that’s paired with an electric motor. The engine is rated at 140 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque. This powertrain could be offered in the upcoming Seltos Hybrid.

A Seltos Hybrid would compete against vehicles like the Kia Niro and Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid.

A lot of automakers have made changes to their electrification plans to account for more hybrids and plug-in hybrids. Waning demand for all-electric vehicles has automakers rethinking their plans to go all-in on EVs. Ford, General Motors, and Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) have all recently outlined changes that they’re making going forward to account for more hybrids and plug-in hybrids.

In the same report, The Korea Economic Daily stated that Genesis is set to release its first hybrid in 2025. Genesis is expected to introduce hybrid versions of the G80 midsize sedan and GV70 compact SUV.
