Chevrolet may be killing the current Bolt and Bolt EUV as we currently know them at the end of this year, but the Bolt nameplate won’t be dormant for too long. General Motors CEO Mary Barra reportedly confirmed that the next generation of the Bolt will arrive in 2025 at an Automotive Press Association event, reports Automotive News. Apparently, Bolt EV owners kept sharing how much they loved the electric vehicle, so GM’s going to bring it back in a few years.

Speaking at the event, Barra stated that current owners who shared their admiration for the EV with the automaker made it an easy decision for GM to bring the next-gen Bolt EV back so quickly. “That’s been something that has been really great this year, and that informed the decision that we’ll have that back again ’25,” Barra said reports Automotive News.

InsideEVs reached out to a GM official who confirmed some information regarding the upcoming Bolt EV. Unlike the current Bolt lineup where the Bolt EV is a small hatchback and the Bolt EUV is a subcompact SUV, the upcoming Bolt will only be available as an SUV. We suspect that Chevy will keep the Bolt EUV name around for the new model. Additionally, the outlet claims that the 2025 Bolt will be a heavily updated compared to the current model that’s on sale and comes with more advanced hardware.

“We are glad to see the enthusiasm surrounding the upcoming Chevrolet Bolt,” the GM official told InsideEVs. “We will share details as we get closer to its launch date. We’re excited, as the new Bolt will build on the formula that has made it the success it is today.”

Information on the 2025 Bolt is scarce at the moment. Chevrolet has confirmed that the next-gen Bolt will utilize the automaker’s Ultium EV platform and will have lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) batteries. Not only will this decision allow Chevy to manufacture the EV more efficiently and cost-effectively, but it will also bring the Bolt into the modern era. By most accounts, the Bolt EV and Bolt EUV are outdated EVs. You only have to look at their charging rates of up to 55 kW to know how behind they are against competitors that can charge at up to 350 kW. The next-gen Bolt isn’t expected to receive a bottom-up redesign, but will be more along the lines of a large update.

Despite being older EVs on sale, the Bolt EV and Bolt EUV are popular electric cars. Through the first nine months of this year, Chevrolet has sold 49,492 Bolt EV models – Chevrolet doesn’t differentiate between the Bolt EV and Bolt EUV. The Bolt nameplate is on its way to having its best year since 2016 and has already surpassed last year when it accounted for 38,122 units sold.

We’re not surprised to hear that GM is working hard to get the next-gen Bolt to market in 2025. Current EVs are far too expensive and unattainable for the majority of shoppers. It’s also not surprising to hear that the future Bolt will only be available as an SUV, as the body style continues to be incredibly popular.
