The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has crash-tested the 2024 Hyundai Elantra and 2024 Hyundai Tucson and both have done well enough to earn the organization’s highest award of being named Top Safety Pick+ vehicles. The 2024 Elantra improves upon last year’s model, which earned a Top Safety Pick award, while the 2024 Tucson’s rating matches last year’s SUV.

For 2024, Hyundai updated the Elantra with a new exterior design, revised headlights and taillights, new wheel designs, and some extra safety features. The 2024 Elantra arrives with rear side-impact airbags and a rear-seat seatbelt reminder as standard equipment on all models. The compact sedan also receives a steering wheel with haptic feedback for the lane-keeping assist, blind spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert systems.

The changes seemed to have work, as the 2024 Elantra earned the IIHS’ highest award. Last year, the 2023 Elantra earned a Top Safety Pick, earning a rating of Good in the organization’s six crash tests, coming with Poor-rated headlights as standard, being available with Good-rated headlights, and having a front crash prevention system that earned a Superior rating. The largest change with the 2024 model is that it comes with Good-rated headlights as standard. That small change is all it takes to boost the compact car’s rating.

Just like the Elantra, the Tucson receives rear-side airbags, a seatbelt reminder system, and a steering wheel with haptic feedback for the 2024 model year. While Hyundai has made these changes, the Tucson continues to be a Top Safety Pick+ vehicle.

The 2024 Hyundai Elantra is one of the few Top Safety Pick+ compact cars on sale. The Acura IntegraMazda3Subaru ImprezaToyota Prius, and Toyota Prius Prime are other Top Safety Pick+ vehicles.

For the 2024 Hyundai Tucson, it competes in a more competitive class. Other Top Safety Pick+ SUVs in the class include the Honda CR-VHyundai IONIQ 5Kia SportageMazda CX-30, and Subaru Solterra.
